Introduction
The Great Western Railway was built to haul sugar beets. Even its name, which seems so fitting for a Colorado railroad, originated with its parent, the Great Western Sugar Company. Possibly because it traverses the rolling prairie at the foot of the Rockies, the Great Western Railway has never enjoyed the attention that other Colorado railroads received. Daring mountain railroad ventures such as the Colorado Midland, the Rio Grande Southern, or the Georgetown, Breckenridge & Leadville created quite a bit of excitement in their heydays. But most of these well-known Colorado railroads now exist only in history books. In the meantime, the Great Western Railway continues to haul sugar beets over the same tracks that were laid back in 1901. In fact, the Great Western is unique among operating American railroads in that it still hauls passengers on its regular mixed freights, which are sometimes still powered by steam! Rather than having become part of history, to the great joy of train lovers the Great Western continues to make history.
