The American invasion of British North America in 1812-1814 had been repulsed largely by British soldiers, but the Americans had erred in launching their attack during the good weather. Winter would have been their ally.
For the British colonists, winter was the enemy. Almost totally reliant upon the Mother Country for its defence, everyone from the man on the rough streets to the Governor-General knew that an American invasion in the winter could not be easily stopped.
With the fortress at Quebec blocked by ice, and the road from Halifax through New Brunswick made impassable by deep snow, Britain could not send soldiers quickly enough to help repulse a winter invasion and, with Imperial commitments growing elsewhere, could not afford to station troops in Central Canada for indefinite periods.
