By the middle of the 18th century, the
timber-built ship had reached the apex of its development. The fighting ship of this period was of course a wondrous object to behold, yet it was also a highly functional one. In an age of rapid colonial expansion, it was the most complicated and deadly weapon in the arsenal of the great powers.
Because naval vessels of the time were so highly valued and so expensive to construct, remarkably meticulous records were kept of everything concerning them, from the initial purchase of their timbers to the smallest details of their furnishings and armaments. Even the names and particular skills of the men who built the ships were catalogued.
Building the Wooden Fighting Ship is not only a fascinating account of the construction of a noble and historic warship, but also a vivid and often surprising portrait of life and labor in the 18th century.
