Foreword.
THERE is perhaps no more prolific builder of locomotive models in the United States than a Cincinnati railroad claim agent named M. D. Thornburgh. At last count he had built 65 locos, and quantity does not in this case mean sacrifice of quality, for each model is a gem of fine workmanship and attention to detail. In one of the very early issues of THE MODEL. RAILROADER M. D. T. contributed an article describing in detail the construction of an old time locomotive model he had built. I later persuaded him to describe for our readers the construction of other of his models, knowing that the articles would not even verge on armchairing, but would be practical to the core. The first articles turned out so popular that many more followed, and Thornburgh has now won as much acclaim as an author as with his model building.
This book represents a collection in a single volume of a number of articles describing construction of an Atlantic type 0 gauge locomotive and a train of passenger cars suitable for the locomotive. It is an ideal train for the average model railroad, and the directions, while specifically intended for 0 gauge, have been successfully used by HO and 00 gaugers as well by simply resealing dimensions as necessary. The same methods can be used in most cases, sheet materials are only slightly thinner, and other materials such as rods and square sections are more than half as large to give necessary strength without sacrificing appearance. May I emphasize again that Thornburgh has actually built every model described in any of his articles, including this book, and that he has used exactly the methods he sets out for you. The Author. Third generation railroader (his grandfather was an engineer and his father a yardmaster on the B&O), M. D. Thornburgh got his first job as a brakeman on the B&O over 20 years ago. and is now in the claim department. He has never worked anywhere else. He studied art at night school, figuring to be an artist, but found he's too much of a railroader for that. Considerably on the sunny side of 40. he likes to build models with as few tools as possible. and with scrap material. He is married, and has a son in high school who is not interested in model railroading, much to M. D.'s chagrin.
