First reaching across the New York-Pennsylvania state line in the early 1880s with the Rochester & Pittsburgh Railway, the founding fathers of the Buffalo Rochester & Pittsburgh continued the push toward their goal of reaching the moneymaking commodities in Pennsylvania and building a permanent, direct rail line through oil and coalfields that would stand the test of time. The formidable task of building a railway through the foothills of the Allegheny Mountains was enough to try the patience of the Railway's financial backers and exerted pressure on the economics of the Railway itself. Fortunately, success eventually prevailed and the Buffalo Rochester & Pittsburgh Railway continued serving the growing network into the Twentieth Century. With proud employees, superb equipment and property, along with the blessing of land rich in natural resources, the BR&P prospered.
What today has become the Second Mainline Subdivision, traces its roots to the Rochester & Pittsburgh and its expansionist desires. It was in 1881 that the R&P began building south towards DuBois and Punxsutawney, at the same time as the construction of the Buffalo branch. The Railway built first to Howard, Pennsylvania, where it connected to the parallel Erie Railway Bradford Division mainline. The Erie line was used for some thirty-seven miles to Clarion Junction, where the R&P resumed building their own route through DuBois to Walston, outside of Punxsutawney.
