The photographs of Harry Hale Buckwalter stand out among those of his contemporaries because they are eclectic and sometimes audacious, and because Buckwalter's personality and visionary charm show through in every print. While many other photographers singlemindedly pursued their specialized subjects, Buckwalter dabbled in every kind of photography, from portraits to landscapes and from spot news to aerial views.
The varied subject matter of Buckwalter's work reflects the breadth of his personal interests. Like a modest, Rocky Mountain version of Benjamin Franklin, Buckwalter was fascinated by the technological developments of his day, and was quick to experiment with gadgets of all kinds. He was an inventor, a balloonist, a radio pioneer, and an eccentric gentleman scientist with a youthful sense of fun. He was one of the earliest filmmakers in the region, Colorado's first recognized photojournalist, and the first person west of St. Louis to make x-ray pictures. At the same time, he participated wholly in public life. He was a civic leader who was well-known throughout the Front Range and whose filmmaking and scientific exploits commanded local headlines for many years.
