Introduction
WHEN WRITING ANY BOOK ABOUT TRANSPORT, WHETHER IT BE ships, trains, aircraft or trams, the difficulty is to decide, not what to put in but, rather, what to omit. The subject is so vast that each of its branches could have a whole book to itself and, in fact, many such hooks have been written, particularly on railways.
A tramway is a form of railway and its study can be divided in a similar manner. finance-law--management fares structure fares collection-staff relations-motive power-permanent way--operating problems-service schedules-passenger vehicles. etc.-all these being subjects on which large separate volumes could be written. The book you are now reading is an attempt to describe trams as the British public knew them, that is to say the characteristics of the cars they travelled in and the tracks these ran on, but even such limited subjects could fill thick volumes and can be approached from the professional and technical or from the lay standpoint. The course chosen for this book lies between the two and some technical terms will find their way into the chapters.
The aim has been to give the tramless generation now growing up some idea of the vehicles which their fathers used and to give nostalgic reading to those fathers and their fathers, too.
The pictures have been chosen to serve not only to illustrate the text but to provide a collection of representative tram pictures. Some of them are of trams only. but others show trams in their 'natural habitat'-the street--constituting an interesting record of fashions in other forms of transport, in clothes, shop fascias and so on.
The author would like to acknowledge the help given by several transport authorities and friends who have supplied photographs and by Mr. W. Gratwicke. Mr. R. Elliott, Charles E. Lee and Mr. G. Claydon for having read the manuscript and offered advice.
It was pleasing to read the criticisms which were made of the first edition of this book. On the whole they were most complimentary and so far as has been possible they have been borne in mind in preparing this second edition. Only a word here and there has been altered. hut the captions to some of the illustrations have been amplified and a few photographs changed.
