Despite the disappearance of the GWR in 1948, the newly created Western Region of British Railways still managed to maintain its individuality and, even after the 1955 Modernisation Plan, followed its own course, developing a fleet of diesel locomotives powered by hydraulic rather than the more usual electric transmission.
