FOREWORD
THIS booklet lists all British Railways locomotives numbered between 40000 and 59999 and London Midland electric motor coaches. This series of numbers includes all London Midland Region and Scottish (ex-L.M.S.) Region steam locos.
1. At the head of each class will be found a list of any important sub-divisions of the class, usually in order of introduction. Each sub-division is given a reference mark, by which its relevant dimensions (if differing from those of other sub-divisions) and the
locomotives it comprises (if known) may be identified.
2. The lists of dimensions at the head of each class show locomotives fitted with two inside cylinders unless otherwise stated, e.g. (0)= two outside cylinders.
3. Superheated locos. are denoted by the letters " Su " after the boiler pressure. " SS " denotes that some are superheated.
4. The date on which the first locomotive of a class was built is denoted by " Introduced."
5. Where locomotives have been renumbered other than by the addition of 40000 to their former L.M.S. numbers, the details of former L.M.S. numbers are given.
6. Some standard British Railways locomotives numbered between 70000 and 99999 are operating on the London Midland and Scottish Regions. These engines are described in part 4 of the A BC of British Railways Locomotives, but some are illustrated in this booklet as they are logical developments in design and appearance of ex-L.M.S. types of the same wheel arrangement.
7. S denotes Service (Departmental) locomotive. This reference letter is introduced only for the reader's guidance and is not borne by the locomotive concerned.
8. The numbers of locomotives in service have been checked to August 8th 1953.
