INTRODUCTION
Class A (1) trains include newspaper trains with their own special vans and express passenger trains which often included a full brake van for parcels, passenger's luggage and passenger's luggage in advance, and could also include vehicles conveying perishable, urgent or high security loads as well as horses and prize cattle. Such vehicles which conformed to passenger coaching stock requirements also ran in class C (3) trains which had no passenger carrying coaches in their make-up. Some coverage has been given to fish and fruit vans in No. 3 in this Profile Series and milk tanks appeared in No. 4 but each of these types is given a little space as they were such common components of the trains under consideration. Various other vehicles which ran in class C trains are also included here such as gas tank wagons that were used to fill the tanks of restaurant cars which used gas for cooking and also any gas-lit vehicles still in service. When empty, gas tank wagons were returned to various supply points for refilling such as Swindon Works on the Western Region.
The parcel van fleet was never standardised in BR days and thus some very old vehicles could be seen running many years after Nationalisation. To add to this, the movement of such vehicles was not generally restricted - although older types tended to be allocated to their original area for repairs. To assist in the identification of non-passenger rolling stock, coded letters were used which were sometimes painted on the vehicles. The early codings were subsequently changed when the TOPS system was introduced.
