From the early years of Britain's railway history, the builders of the nation's network were faced by innumerable physical challenges  such as mountain ranges and long river valleys which needed to be overcome before the country could be well-served by this new form of transport. One solution to this problem was the construction of bridges and viaducts and from the building of the Causey Arch on the Tanfield Railway in the 1730s now the world's oldest surviving railway bridge - the countryside has seen the building of numerous superb viaducts. These bridges and viaducts can physically dominate their environment and have helped to shape many communities. In his latest book for Ian Allan Publishing, Martin Smith, whose earlier books on the railways of Somerset and Devon have been widely praised, studies the history of many of the finest railway bridges in Britain. Apart from the obvious structures  such as the infamous first Tay Bridge, the powerful Forth Bridge and the much-lamented Belah Viaduct, which was also designed by the unfortunate Sir Thomas Bouch of Tay Bridge famehe examines many of the lesser known structures. Fully illustrated with both line drawings and a superb selection of photographs British Railway Bridges Viaducts is a comprehensive study of an important, but often ignored, aspect of Britain's railway history
