FOREWORD
THIS Atlas and Gazetteer has been based on the Pregrouping Atlas produced by W. Philip Conolly. In amending it to present Britain's rail system at the present time, some obstacles have been encountered principally owing to the constant changes brought about by closures, re-naming of stations and changes in regional boundaries, but is as accurate as possible to January 1965. Lines closed to passenger traffic are shewn hatched regardless of whether they are open for goods or closed completely. It will be noticed that some closed lines are shown as such while others closed somewhat previously have not been so marked; this is due to the fact that some sheets of the map had already been completed when the closures took place whilst it has been possible to make amendments to later sheets right up to the time of their actually going on to press.
The six regions are shown in distinctive colours, viz:
Eastern:Dark Blue
London Midland:Maroon
North Eastern:Tangerine
Scottish:Light Blue
Southern:Green
Western:Brown
Where possible, independent lines have been shown in purple. London Transport lines are shown in purple, but tube lines when running below the surface are not shown. Where possible, all District and Metropolitan lines have been shown.
The Gazetteer portion is divided into six sections, as follows:
1. List of abbreviations used to represent the various regions, companies and pre-grouping companies owning or operating the various lines and stations.
2. Index to Tunnels.
3. Index to Principal Summits.
4. Index to Viaducts and Major Bridges.
5. Index to British Rail Stations.
6. Index to independent railway's stations
In each of the indices mentioned, the pregrouping railway owner is shown, together with the present British Railways region, where applicable. The Gazetteer of British Rail Stations shows the official station designation; in most cases this corresponds with the names shown on the map, though sometimes for the sake of clarity on the maps it has been impracticable to show the full name. In the Stations Index, when no pre-group owner is shewn, the station has been opened since 1923.
Many towns with complicated railway layouts have been shown as enlarged insets and in addition areas such as London, South Wales, Glasgow, etc. with ramified railway routes and connecting lines receive more detailed attention in the separate sheets; interpretation of the initials of the various pregrouping companies etc. will be found in the list of abbreviations shown on pages 5 and 6.
