However, it was not only the diesel-mechanical railcar that featured in the Modernisation Plan; although it was certainly the more important in sheer numerical order. One Region chose not to utilise the DMU, but to go its own way instead and to develop the diesel-electric power unit for multiple-unit use. This Region was of course, the Southern, and it is this fleet of DEMUs that are first of all to be described in this book.
