Color Pictorial Series Volume 1
This is the first of a planned series of all color books covering the operations of the Pacific Great Eastern, British Columbia Railway and BC Rail at different periods in the history of the line. This first volume will concentrate on the rather brief period from 1984 through the end of 1987. Later volumes will cover British Columbia Railway operations in the 1970's, the PGE years and BC Rail up to the merger with Canadian National in 2004.
1984 1987 was a pivotal period in the history of British Columbia's Government owned regional railway. Created in 1912 as the Pacific Great Eastern Railway the line had a rather tumultuous beginning and a checkered 92 year history. Nicknamed "Please go Easy", or "Past God's Endurance", PGE worked in relative obscurity for most of the first 40 years of its existence. But by the 1980's, the railway had reinvented itself and was an expanding transportation system that was vital to the future for the Province of British Columbia. This was an interesting period in the history of the line and was the time when I first began to visit the railway as a railfan and photographer.
