Britains New Railway By O S Nock Hard Cover 1966 Electrification of the London-Midland main lines from Euston to Birmingham, Stoke on Trent, Crewe, Liverpool and Manchester. 224 Pages
THE extension of the London Midland electrification from Manchester and Liverpool through to Euston in December, 1965 marks the end of a decisive phase in the greatest railway reconstruction project this country has ever seen; and it is to mark this event that the present book has been published.
When the General Manager of the London Midland Region asked me to write a book about `Britain's New Railway' I was already aware of some aspects of the work involved. But it was not until I came to meet the chief officers of the various railway departments concerned and to see something of their work in the field that I - a lifelong railway enthusiast and student of railway working in all its ramifications - began to comprehend something of the colossal effort that was being made.
In some of my earlier books I have written in detail about certain aspects of railways - locomotive practice, operating, historical, and so on; but this time it has been the experience of a lifetime, and a great privilege, to be taken behind the scenes as it were, in all branches of the engineering work, in the overall planning, and to see the new timetables prepared for introduction in April, 1966. In the subsequent pages I have endeavoured to convey something of the overall task, while the many illustrations taken by staff photographers of the London Midland Region certainly speak for themselves.
I must express my warmest thanks to the officers of the London Midland Region who have helped me so much in gathering material, and I finish the task with pleasant memories of many days spent with members of their respective staffs, `on location', on constructional sites, in signal boxes, in trains and stations, in the cabs of the new locomotives, or round the conference table. My thanks are due to them all.
