Brill City And Interurban Cars Reprinted by Pacific Railway Journal 1961 80 pages
The cars shown in these pages have been built since the last car catalog was issued, which bears the date of August, 1910. During these three years much progress has been made both in construction and design. At the American Electric Railway Association Convention held in Atlantic City in October, 1910, a Brill Semi-Convertible Car with a 13611 Plain Arch Roof was exhibited and from that time onward the majority of city and interurban cars built in this country have had this type of roof. The departure involved a different method of ventilating in winter and this has been satisfactorily met by the 13611 "Exhaust" Ventilator. Steel underframe construction has been brought to an advanced stage during this period and the use of steel for side construction up to the window sill is now comparatively common. The use of steel for the upper structure has made long strides and a number of large orders for steel cars for both surface and elevated railways have been filled. All-steel construction, however, is still confined to special types of cars and special forms of service. The variety of types of part steel and all steel cars and the large number having steel underframes, shown in this catalog, indicate the extent of equipment, facilities and experience of the Brill and subsidiary companies in this class of construction.
The Brill Semi-Convertible Window System continues to be used in the majority of city cars and in many interurban types. The standard sash arrangement remains the same as used for many years-the two sashes telescoping by means of brass tongue-and-groove slides on each side, and a pair of rollers at the top of the upper sash running on bow-shaped, flat-steel guides in the roof pockets. The combined advantages of a large window opening made entirely free of sashes at will, a low window sill, an extra wide car interior, sashes stored aloft where the glass cannot be broken when not in use, are only obtainable with the Brill Semi-Convertible Window System.
In selecting the cars to show in this catalog, many interesting types were omitted on account of similarity with others which were chosen because of certain features of plan or construction desirable to illustrate. The selection of special purpose cars was especially difficult, owing to the large variety of types built during recent years. This is also true of steel underframes, of which a few more or less standard types are shown. To avoid unnecessary duplication in the styles of car interiors, a selection was made which will be found to be fairly comprehensive both in standard and special details.
The weights given arc estimated in a number of instances and therefore are not to be accepted in important cases without verification.
With few exceptions all the cars shown are mounted on Brill trucks. The seats of practically every car in these pages, and also such items of equipment as folding gates, sand boxes, track scrapers, conductors' bells, alarm gongs, brake handles and hand wheels, motormen's seats, etc., are of Brill manufacture.
The services of the Engineering Department are at the command of everyone desiring information on any matter connected with the design and construction of cars and trucks.
