DUST JACKET INTRODUCTION
Open trolley cars belong to that delightful but relatively brief era that bridges the gap between a rural and somewhat Victorian society and modern America. While this era is shared with early automobiles, massive steamships and luxury railroad trains, the open trolley is accorded a special place in history because it provided a meaningful service that everyone could afford. Nostalgia also grants open trolley cars a special place because in addition to mere transportation, they were fun to ride.
Alas, altogether too soon, America became of age and the open trolley fell victim to modernization. While the need for transportation remained, the following replacement vehicles failed to provide the same type of service. Practicality increased and the fun diminished with closed trolley cars, modern streetcars and the latest in rapid transit.
Author Stephen L. Meyers offers this lighthearted history that simultaneously brings out the fun and nostalgia of the open trolley car while providing a definitive history of this segment of Americana.
