Summary
The beguiling atmosphere of the remote rural branch line survived, together with a number of busy mineral lines and anachronistic light railways, well in to the post-Nationalisation era and contributed in no small way to the perception which
many still have of an important aspect of the steam railway in its prime. It is an era which, though kept alive in part by the preservation movement, is now long departed; but its memory can still be recalled thanks to the dedicated efforts of those who recorded the story while it was still to be observed.
In this survey, the branch line scene is recalled over the whole country via the byways of England and Wales to the far north of Scotland. In essence it is a reprint in one combined volume of an original four part series which has been unavailable in any form since 1986, but by adopting a new format, the information can be made available again at a lower price in real terms than the total of the original four parts.
Edited by JOHN SMART who has also added a new introductory section by way of bonus, this edition contains some 330 evocative pictures, together with extended captions and detailed supportive text. It offers a truly magnificent overview of British branch lines in their prime, fully up to the high standard expected from Atlantic.
