Throughout the 1950s and into the early 1960s, streetcars were \"out,\" and trackless trolleys were \"in.\" As the decade of the 1960s came into play the trackless trolleys gave way to the diesel bus as the predominate mode. The 1960s gave birth to the age of publicly owned transit systems across the nation and the trend went away from bus transportation and towards the expansion of the rapid transit systems, both existing and new-start cities.
