The Boston & Maine/Maine Central ordered in June 1934 a three car streamliner from the Budd Company with Electro Motive Corporation supplying the diesel engine and power plant. Delivered in February 1935, #6000, known as the FLYING YANKEE, was an all stainless-steel three car train nearly identical to the Burlington Zephyr, built one year earlier. The front coach section seated twenty-eight passengers including a buffet section, and the intermediate coach seated twenty-four passengers ahead of the doorway and thirty-six behind the door. The rear observation coach seated twenty passengers in the lounge section and thirty-two in the coach section.
