The Boston & Maine Railroad purchased a large fleet of P-2a Pacifics in 1911 and P-2bs in 1913 to modernize its fleet of 4-6-2 steam locomotives. All of these engines were built by the American Locomotive Company (Alco) at Schenectady, NY. Ten more P-2 Pacifics arrived in 1916 from Alco with a new classification of P-2c. With the addition of superheaters to all members of the P-2a and P-2b classes, they were subsequently reclassified as P-2d in July 1924. By the early 1920s, the B&M needed additional Pacifies for its larger long-distance passenger trains that were headed north to Portland, ME or west to Troy, NY. Alco received that order for ten new Pacifics designated in the P-3 class. Numbered 3700-3709, the locomotives were built in October 1923 by Alco at their Schenectady plant.
