In Boston and Maine In Color, Jeremy and Jeff Plant left off with the transition from the B&M under the presidency of Alan Dustin to Timothy Mellon's purchase of the railroad. Mellon's purchase of the B&M in 1983 was one of three key purchases which began with the Maine Central (MEC) in 1981 and ended with the Delaware & Hudson (D&H) in 1984. With the MEC, B&M, and D&H all under the umbrella of Mellon's Guilford Transportation Industries, a new, major regional railroad in the Northeast was born.
However, it was only a couple years before a series of labor disputes threatened the cohesiveness of Guilford. In 1986, the Brotherhood of Maintenance of Way (BMWE) employees on the MEC went on strike in response to Guilford wanting to contract out track work, cut wages, and change working rules. This strike spread to the B&M and the D&H, and after roughly three months the unions won a Supreme Court case that allowed the BMWE to strike on railroads such as the Norfolk & Western and Conrail, who were assisting Guilford through locomotive repairs, switching, providing power for trains, and assigning managers to help run trains. This broader movement ended-up shutting down the majority of railroads in the East, which led President Ronald Reagan to appoint a Presidential Emergency Board (PEB) to end the strike. The PEB put all railroad employees back to work for 60 days under their current contracts until they provided their findings to the president (Smith).
