So what's the "Border Tier Road?" It's the railroad line from Kansas City, through Paola, Fort Scott, and Girard, to Baxter Springs. It gained its nickname early; a news item in the August 18, 1869 issue of the Fort Scott Weekly Monitor refers to the line as the "Border Tier Railroad." Who built it, and what happened after it was built, is the subject of this book.
