Appendix 281
The weevil ravages became so destructive that the Dallas Commercial Club was afraid that King Cotton might lose his throne, so it got busy sponsoring "boll weevil" conferences with the mayors of the surrounding towns and cities. They wanted to see what could be done toward stopping this threat to their nine cent staple. It was the subject on the tongue of almost everybody. When it was remembered that this new jerkwater railroad had not been nicknamed, Lewis Mims, with the Construction Company and now with the Freeport Sulphur Company at Houston, jocularly suggested that it be called THE BOLL WEEVIL. That nickname stuck and the line was so known far and wide, until the new and rejuvenated Trinity & Brazos Valley adopted THE VALLEY ROAD as its official name.
