It was the brainchild of Sir William Molesworth of Pencarrow, a local landowner and, later, member of Palmerston's Government. Just a handful of lines had been built when the B\u0026amp;W opened its first route, including the Stockton \u0026amp; Darlington, Liverpool \u0026amp; Manchester, Canterbury \u0026amp; Whitstable and Leicester \u0026amp; Swannington, the latter opening just two years earlier in 1832.
