2 The Powder River Basin, a seemingly desolate grassland in Wyoming and Montana, contains the world's largest reserve of low-sulfur coal. With new track, technology and equipment, BNSF is laying the groundwork for the continued dramatic growth of PRB coal traffic.
10 As part of its ongoing commitment to safer train operations, BNSF is pioneering the use of advanced brake technology. Electronically controlled pneumatic (ECP) brakes have so far received rave reviews from BNSF train operations people, who find that ECP brakes work more quickly and smoothly than traditional air brakes.
14 In 1995, BNSF used more than one billion gallons of fuel at a cost of $663 million. Efforts to reduce fuel consumption not only save the company money, they also lower air emissions and help reduce use of this limited resource. BNSF has a variety of approaches to reduce its fuel consumption and fuel costs.
20 The Hill-Holliday Founders Award was established to recognize the tremendous efforts of BNSF people toward achieving the company vision. In April, the 81 people selected to receive this year's award gathered in Fort Worth for a recognition ceremony and dinner. These photos commemorate that event and the achievements of this year's recipients.
