That stance changed quickly as the material for the book came together and it became apparent that this was not simply a railroad story. It was instead a fascinating cross-section of rural New England life and times expressed in the birth, maturity and slow decline of a line which acquired the status of a local institution yet never operated 30 miles of track at its greatest extent! This book documents the relationship of that railroad over time with the people and events affecting it and the Valley which sustained it. As such, it is not intended as a definitive history although its preparation entailed much historical research.
