DUST JACKET INTRODUCTION
Here is the first detailed study of Colorado's coke and ore smelting industries and their importance to the state's mountain railroads. During the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the three were closely intertwined, and the railroads derived as much revenue hauling coal and coke as from transporting mining ore.
Some familiar names in Colorado history appear, including Palmer, Evans, Moffat and Guggenheim, as well as many lesser known but equally colorful personalities. In addition, the historical development of various refining and smelting processes is fully covered. Dozens of sites are described, including GPS locators for present day exploration.
Black Smoke and White Iron will be of value to anyone with an interest in mining, railroading and the industrial history of the Rocky Mountain West.
263 pages, 30 color and over 240 black and white illustrations, drawings, maps, smelter locomotive rosters, glossary, bibliography and index.
