This portion of the saga about the Dieselization of the Pennsylvania Railroad studies the period July 1, 1947 to December 31, [951. It was a time of change as the railroad tried to survive the turbulent postwar era. The new Diesels were only part of the story, there were many things on management's mind and ill were having an adverse effect on the railroad's profitability.
We start with the arrival of the first F3 freight Diesels in July 1947 and look at the impact they had on the railroad's operations and attitudes. These pioneering units were intended to be part of a large-scale "experiment," instead, great changes followed, many of which weren't planned or anticipated by the railroad.
