The history of Ramsey really begins with the opening of the Paterson & Ramapo Railroad, just one hundred years ago. On October 30, 1848, a notice appeared in the Paterson Intelligencer that "The Paterson and Ramapo Rail Road being finished, the Cars will commence running regularly on Wednesday, the 1st of Novemberleaving New York by the Jersey City Ferry Boats, foot of Courtlandt-street, at 8 o'clock, A. M. and 5 P. M., and Suffron's Depot, (on the Erie Rail Road,) on the arrival of the Cars which leave Port Jarvis at 6 A. M. and 3 P. M."
