Birmingham To Leicester Line, The By Chris Banks DJ 1994
The Birmingham To Leicester Line By Chris Banks Dust Jacket Copyright 1994 223 Pages
The idea for this book stemmed from the discovery that little has appeared in print concerning the line, and so this volume is designed to fill this gap. Its sectional nature, based on the historical beginnings tends to make the line overshadowed by its more well known neighbours. Yet for all this it has remained a fascinating and functional railway and forms an important link to the Eastern Counties. In lays past trains would operate through to the coast using the Midland & Great Northern Joint Railway's metals.
Today, most of the original buildings have disappeared. but two manual signal boxes remain on the Nuneaton to Leicester section, together with their attendant semaphore signals. Re-signalling took place at Leicester as late as 1987 and the rich collection of signals disappeared for ever. Nuneaton, Hinckley and Narborough stations still retain original structures.
The layout of the hook is planned in such a way as to take the reader on the journey from Birmingham to Leicester in words and pictures. stopping on the way to explore some of the important industrial concerns that operated their own locomotives alongside the main route. Also included are scenes on the main lines out from Birmingham to Water Orton and Leicester to Wigston, these lines being shared with the local trains. Nuneaton Trent Valley also had a local service to Leicester, serving the six stations en route. The sight and sound of express trains rushing by as the local awaited departure was always an added bonus and so the main line scenes at Nuneaton are featured. Throw in visits to Saltley, Nuneaton and Leicester engine sheds, as well as a brief look at the long forgotten depots at Stockingford and Wigston, and it is hoped the book will give pleasure to those who know the line and delight those who don't.
Most of the photographs, so far as is known, have not been previously published and those few that have appeared in print before are considered so excellent in quality they could not be resisted. My sincere thanks goes to all the photographers whose work over the years has made this book possible. Thanks must also go to all those kind people who have given their time and help which has proved invaluable.
So settle back in your armchair and take a journey along the Birmingham to Leicester line, as it was and as it is today. Enjoy the ride.
