BILL LANDMESSER'S HOT BOX RECORDS
Wm. W. Landmesser, who went on to become the last Motive Power Superintendent of the Minneapolis & St. Louis, formed the hypothesis that hot boxes were caused by "bumps" in the track structure which caused the car to "hop" thereby momentarily separating the axle and brass slightly, potentially allowing a bit of waste to come between axle and brass and act as a "wiper" preventing proper lubrication resulting in a hot box. This record of hot boxes was kept in an effort to prove or disprove the hypothesis. Since the effort was not only outside his duties but outside his department, insufficient information was accumulated to reach a conclusion.
The record contains 1333 entries in which 1219 cars are identifiable by type as follows:
box cars 734open hoppers53
reefers130stock cars12
gondolas 107covered hoppers8
tank cars 93cabooses (M&StL)5
flat cars 72ventilated box cars 5
Also included are two M&StL MOW cars & M&StL scale test car 03. Most numerous railroads represented are:
197 M&StL42 GATX
68PRR39NYC
63GN38MILW
61NP37RI
53C&NW34ATSF
48CB&Q34IC
For various reasons 711 set out, 129 were rebrassed, 73 were repacked and a mere 29 were actually identified - one way or another - as having a hot box.
The most predominant loads were as follows:
flour110potatoes 63
corn107coal61
wheat64cement48
The record was transcribed into digital form by Gene Green who added the column "MD" to aid identifying cars by type.
