From Moscow to the Pacific on the Trans-Siberian Railway is the big train ride. It is a journey of nearly 6,000 miles, stretching over seven time zones and consuming almost eight 24-hour days. Eric Newbyin no way a conventional traveler, as readers of his previous books will know looked forward to the experience of voyaging through the plains and distances of another world, seeing it as "something in parentheses in a life which was sometimes almost too full of movement." When in 1977 he eventually set out, accompanied by a Slovene, a German and a Russian (his wife, a photographer and the official Russian "guide"), it turned out to be more and less than they had bargained for.
