Introduction
The Years of Change: 1948-50161
The idea for this book was formed some years ago, when I first began to realise that1 an astonishing number of colour transparency images of our railways had survived from the pre-1950 era. Not all of them were very good in quality terms
and some of them gave no hope of ever being able to be reproduced in print, but almost all were of great historical interest. But were there enough to justify a full length book? The general concensus was `probably not' until by great good fortune, two or three hitherto unknown collections (totalling over 100 images) came to my attention by way of photograph submissions for the house magazines which my firm publishes. We were able to negotiate terms (including complete purchase of the largest collection) and the availability of these images, added to those already available via other sources, made this book possible.
None of it could have happened without the active co-operation of Colour-Rail, a firm masterminded by Ron White who, as well as trying to make an `honest crust' has probably done more than anyone else I know to ensure the survival of these important historical images in a more permanent form than would have been possible had they been simply left `as taken'. And here, I think it important that a few words should be said about the technical problems involved in making them suitable for printing.
