CHAPTER 3:
MAKING IRON74
Born as the Bethlehem Iron Company along the south bank of the Lehigh River,
Bethlehem Steel had its humble beginnings in 1860 under the direction of John Fritz. Using 17 acres of land adjacent to the Lehigh Valley Railroad tracks and east of the juncture with the North Pennsylvania Railroad, he began construction in earnest. Under contract with Asa Packer and Robert Sayre of the Lehigh Valley Railroad, he drew up plans and contracts for several buildings. The Lehigh Valley Railroad needed iron for locomotives and cars and for rails to repair existing lines and expand into new territory. Dissatisfied with the quality and availability of rail from other domestic suppliers, and unwilling to import better quality stock from Great Britain, Packer and Sayre decided they had the technology to build their own mill. There were sources of iron ore, anthracite coal, and limestone in Pennsylvania and New Jersey readily available by canal boat, but the Lehigh Valley did not want to subsidize its competitors. It insisted on hauling the raw materials by its own rails.
