INTRODUCTION
Several good books have been written which describe the development of the streetcar in Baltimore. The history of the early horse car cable and electric trolley operations as well as the development of a unified system, the United Railways and Electric Company, have been available to the reader for some time. Several articles on the development of the motor bus have also been written. While these works touch on the history of the Baltimore Transit Company they do not, and were not intended to, tell the complete story of the BTC.
My intention was to do just that. This is the story of the Baltimore Transit Company as it existed between 1935 and 1970. It is not simply a story of streetcar, trackless trolley and bus operations. It is also a story of strikes, unions, amusement parks, investigations, fare increases, National City Lines involvement and among other things state takeover.
The library of the Baltimore Streetcar Museum is a wonderful place to find Baltimore Transit history. The Mass Transit Administration donated much of BTC's records some time ago to the library. This history is based on what is found in these records. Especially helpful were the minutes of the board of directors meetings. Page by page, they tell the story of the BTC.
Of course, there is always more to tell. Hopefully, someone will record the post BTC history someday. There were various other transit operations in Baltimore besides the BTC. Their story needs to be told, also.
