Introduction
Maine railroading has been and continues to be as interesting and varied as any state in the country. It is the purpose of this book to provide a concise history plus the best pictures that could be located, many of which have never been published. The text is taken from a book long out of print called Maine Railroads by Edward E. Chase. Published in 1926 with a very limited press run, the book quickly became a collector's item. The original work had no pictures, maps or timetables, something this book seeks to remedy. Through the Maine Railroad Time Line, the last section in this book, rail history has been brought up to date. The focus of this book is on main line and connecting shortline rail service. The ocean and lake steamers, buses, hotels and airlines owned by the railroads plus street railways, industrial and logging lines are of too broad a scope to be included in this effort. It is hoped the reader will find this work a useful research reference, plus pleasing to the eye.
