THE BEST OF ERIC TREACY
Ask any English enthusiast for the name of the most famous railway photographer and the immediate answer will be Treacy. Eric (or Bishop) Treacy caught the era of steam with camera in a way nobody else managed. His images were pure art, yet totally satisfied the most fussy lover of railway hardware. Indeed, turn the pages of this book and you soon hear and smell the thundering locomotives that knit Britain's economic and social life together.
Here is the very best of Treacy in a large, landscape format. Some famous photographs will be examined in new detail because of their finer definition, while others appear in book or indeed in any public form for the first time. The collection is a tribute to Treacy, and also to Patrick Whitehouse who did much to promote the fine photographs before his recent death. His colleagues have carried the work forward, and among them David St John Thomas contributes an introduction.
This is no ordinary railway picture book. Covering a large part of the country, but of course with special emphasis on the North West, it surely confirms that our memories of the majesty of a steam locomotive hurtling through a busy junction or across a barren moor are not just fantasy. Many readers will have their own individual memories vividly recalled by this collection of around 200 of the best shots ever taken by the Railway Bishop.
