BEFORE GUILFORD was developed to address these factors and provide a full-color tribute to the final years of these three proud railroads, in a volume which could be appreciated by railroad enthusiasts and railroad employees, as well as the casual reader with little or no exposure to the railroad industry.
BEFORE GUILFORD was never intended to be a railroad history. However, it does cover: most of the classes of diesel motive power, a wide variety of paint schemes, some branchline operations, several of the major yards, many miles of the three railroads mainlines and some historical background in the era BEFORE GUILFORD. Precise geographical "balance" was considered secondary in importance to the desire to illustrate these railroads in their final independent years. Quite frankly, the book underplays a number of operations which I feel have been well covered in other publications.
