The early photographs in this book date from the 1940s and 1950s, a time of profound transformations in American society, a time witness to economic depression, war, and emergence into relative prosperity. The railroad industry was not spared the pain of change. For the railfan, it was perhaps the best of times and the worst of times. Old steam was passing away making way for new diesel. In the late 1940s and early 50s, five well known if not all major diesel locomotive manufacturers offered different looking and different sounding products for use by the railroads and, incidentally, the enjoyment of the fan.
