The Baltimore & Ohio Railroad Company's reach toward the Mississippi River began in 1854, 27 years after the carrier was chartered in Maryland. That's the year the Central Ohio Railroad provided B&O with its first westward connection with completion of its line from Columbus to Bellaire, Ohio, across the Ohio River from Benwood, W.Va. The Marietta & Cincinnati Railroad from Loveland to Marietta, Ohio, near Parkersburg, W.Va., followed three years later.
B&O's lower Midwestern growth spanned more than seven decades and consisted primarily of taking over and standardizing the gauges of existing lines, which themselves were products of earlier consolidations.
