NOTES365
This is a story of the workmen who harvested the forest crop during the period from 1881 until 1921 on the watersheds of the Susquehanna and the upper Allegheny Rivers in Pennsylvania, and the upper reaches of the Greenbrier and the Cheat Rivers in West Virginia.
All the events and happenings are basically true, or constructed from stories that were related directly to the author by men who lived and worked in the areas described, and/or from information furnished as acknowledged herein.
In writing this book, I tried to have the central character emerge as a composite figure of several of the lumberjacks I have known, by merging true stories that many lumberjacks have told me about their lives, and have in instances called upon personal experiences to bring forth the character of Mike Hannifer.
