Broadbelt for his foresight in saving the builders photographic negative files of the Baldwin Locomotive Works. Mr. Broadbelt had been employed by the Baldwin organization in various positions between 1938 and 1956, one of which was Diesel locomotive designer. It was during this period that he became aware of the company's negative files. Upon learning of the decision to close the locomotive division about 1956, Mr. Broadbelt successfully negotiated with the company management and obtained possession of the negative files. He then transported the collection to his home on his own time.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv style=\"text-align:left\"\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-family:Calibri;font-size:1.13em;color:#000000;font-weight:normal;font-style:normal;text-decoration:none;\"\u003eMr. Broadbelt also had the foresight to salvage the engineering department specification files, approximately 7000 4\"x 7\" data cards, both those arranged in numerical order, and those arranged by wheel arrangement and class. In addition, he obtained the negative log books with their priceless information, and a number of specialized photograph albums. This material was donated to the Museum by the Broadbelt family at the time the negative collection was purchased. As he moved from location to location, the collection was laboriously transported with him; eventually finding a permanent home in Newport News, Virginia. In 1984, after 30 years of providing photographs to the public, he wished to give up the business, and offered the collection for sale.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv style=\"text-align:left\"\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-family:Calibri;font-size:1.13em;color:#000000;font-weight:normal;font-style:normal;text-decoration:none;\"\u003eMr. Broadbelt did not wish to break up the collection to individual buyers and instead sought a group who could purchase the collection intact. He first contacted the most logical group, the Philadelphia Chapter of the National Railway Historical Society, but the purchase was beyond their means. The information was then passed to the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania at Strasburg, Pennsylvania, and their associate group, the \"Friends of the Railroad Museum\". This group had been in existence only a short time, and the purchase was a formidable task. However, with the cooperation of the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission, a purchase agreement was completed to the satisfaction of all parties, and the collection was moved to the Museum in November, 1986.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv style=\"text-align:left\"\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-family:Calibri;font-size:1.13em;color:#000000;font-weight:normal;font-style:normal;text-decoration:none;\"\u003eEarlier in 1966, The Museum Commission had purchased a number of negatives from Mr. Broadbelt that were described as duplicates and redundant. These negatives had been inserted into the Museum's collection at the time the Archives Bureau had assigned numbers to the collection. Upon the arrival of the Broadbelt collection in l986, it was decided that the use of the Baldwin assigned numbers should be retained, and the negatives numbered by Archives should be returned to the Baldwin collection and assigned their old numbers. This was completed in 1988 and now all Baldwin negatives are within the same collection.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv style=\"text-align:left\"\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-family:Calibri;font-size:1.13em;color:#000000;font-weight:normal;font-style:normal;text-decoration:none;\"\u003eThe next immediate task was to reorganize the catalog, which was necessary because the Broadbelt catalog was published half in alphabetical, and half in numerical order. It was also found that the negatives needed to be placed into archival negative envelopes. This task was taken on by Robert Lawrence, a member of the \"Friends of the Railroad Museum\". While re-enveloping these negatives, it was found that many negatives had not been listed in the catalog and quite a few were missing. The entire list was put on computer and first sorted alphabetically, and then numerically. The next process was to check the list against what actually was in the files. Additions, corrections and deletions were made at this point.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv style=\"text-align:left\"\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-family:Calibri;font-size:1.13em;color:#000000;font-weight:normal;font-style:normal;text-decoration:none;\"\u003eIt must be understood that Baldwin did not photograph every locomotive which they built, and there is no explanation as to how they selected those that were photographed. Also, it must be emphasized that the Baldwin-assigned construction number is of no assistance in locating a locomotive in the negative list. The negative list is arranged alphabetically by railroad name, and also lists the assigned roster number given by the owner. These two statistics are the only ones needed to locate a negative number, and are the only reference marks on either the negative or the envelope. Also, if a specific locomotive is not listed in this catalog, it is not in the collection.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv style=\"text-align:left\"\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-family:Calibri;font-size:1.13em;color:#000000;font-weight:normal;font-style:normal;text-decoration:none;\"\u003eThe majority of the negatives in the collection will produce an acceptable print, but there are some, especially in the nitrate film era, which show a degree of deterioration that in some instances will not produce an acceptable print. They have been retained, however, as a matter of record. The sizes available are listed as 4 and\/or 8, which refers to the image area only, not to negative size. The \"4\" is actually a 4 x 7 inch image size used on the specification cards. The \"8\" size may either be 8 x 10 inch, or 7 x II inch in negative size. Since all prints derive from 8 x 10 inch paper, the \"4\" size will actually be 5 x 8 inches, and anything else will be 8 x 10 inches. In the 7 x 11 inch negative size, the paper usually can be positioned to print the full image, however, if this is not possible then any elimination will be at the rear of the tender.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv style=\"text-align:left\"\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-family:Calibri;font-size:1.13em;color:#000000;font-weight:normal;font-style:normal;text-decoration:none;\"\u003eEach page has eight columns or categories. The extreme left column states the owner of record as complete as possible. The REMARKS column gives the position in which the photograph was taken, and other pertinent information.
