The 1600-horsepower all-service locomotive is designed for flexible operation in either general switching or road service. An eight cylinder, supercharged diesel engine drives a direct connected main generator which delivers electric power to traction motors geared to the driving axles. Automatic load regulation is provided through an Auto-Load control system, which protects the diesel engine from overload, and assures maximum smooth acceleration and full engine power output throughout the normal operating range. This automatic determination of available power does not require judgment by the engineer. The throttle controls speed and power with maximum simplicity, leaving the engineer free to handle other controls and observe gauges, signals and road conditions.
