Introduction
The Swiss Jura, forming a protracted range of ridges, peaks and plateaux, skirt the central plain, extending from near Geneva in the west to their eastern extremity of the outcrops in the Zurich lowlands. The main-line railways run along the foothills - principally the Jura foothills route from Geneva to Olten via Biel - or cut across it through lateral valleys, gorges and tunnels. The secondary lines - standard or narrow gauge - penetrate up to the elevated plateaux either by following the longitudinal valleys extending away from a few of the lateral valleys or, like other mountain railways, pursue a winding course to the higher parts of the Jura.
The Jura with its unique topographical features is at the same time a physical barrier, giving the rail traveller an opportunity of experiencing wide panoramas of green meadowland, narrow gorges, gentle wooded slopes and secluded lakes. Here it has been easier to adapt the railway routes to the geography of the country than it was in the high Alps, though the former are by no means lacking in having many impressive feats of engineering to carry the tracks across deep valleys and to negotiate steep gradients.
We invite the reader to go on an extensive ride by rail through the Jura. It will take him along the Jura foothills route from west to east and bring him into contact with all the railways, large and not so large, which branch off it in all their attractive variety to penetrate into the heart of the Jura itself.
