B&O was born in 1827 and died in 1987. Executives with calculators concluded that the administrative costs of keeping B&O's charter exceeded the tax benefits. Rational men in a rational world said B&O should go and it went. The very first flag has now fallen. One doubts if "soul" was discussed.
B&O's soul, however, will be eternal. We dismiss the proposition that it is a flight of fancy to suggest that a secular institution has a soul and will have no patience with the shrill cries of quasi-theologians to the contrary. We will rely on the dictionary which defines soul as "the animating principle...the essential element...the moving spirit...the embodiment of sonic quality." B&O met the test of definition on all counts. B&O will be eternal.
Of course, B&O was eccentric, eclectic, whimsical with only slight hyperbole, it can be said that the B&O never had two of anything. It can also be said that B&O won only one battle its first one. From the beginning B&O was an experiment built and run by dreamers. In 1827, building a Rail Road to the Ohio was not a rational act.
Yet they did and a lot changed because they did. The whole structure of Spaceship Earth's economic and political society was revolutionized and molded by the success of The Baltimore and Ohio Railroad Company proving the validity of the insight that first we mold our institutions and then they mold us.
This is our eighth book on the B&O. Now this is not a "great book, but it is a good one. We have published two "greats".. Impossible Challenge and Q the others, like this one, are simply good.
Like the B&O, this book is whimsical. To select the photography of Milton A. Davis is pure whimsey as his favorite railroad is PR R, B&O's greatest rival. Years ago we said that the true railfan has two favorite railroads-the B&O and another one Thus Mr. Davis.
After all, how many railroads would go through three power revolutions...horsepower to steampower to dieselpower Oats to oil in 160 years. That's soul.
