DUST JACKET INTRODUCTION
Here, at last is the book that B. & O. fans and railroad buffs have been waiting for. Now the combined talents of Larry Sagle and Alvin Staufer bring you a complete history of B. & O. Motive Power, from the lowly TOM THUMB of 1829 to the mighty EM-1 articulateds of 1945 - 130 years of steam ! - and on through to the diesel fleet of 1960.
The Baltimore & Ohio is the oldest common-carrier railroad in America, and from the tiny seed that was planted at Pratt and Poppleton streets in Baltimore the vast railroad network of America grew and spread throughout the Continent, making the United States the prosperous nation that it is today.
Steeped in tradition, and surviving crisis after crisis, the B. & O. has steadfastly forged ahead and, after 137 years of growth, is one of the great and healthy systems of the Country.
The first four chapters cover much of the corporate history and motive power from acquired lines. Thereafter the book is divided into chapters by locomotive wheel arrangements.
Hundreds of photographs, concise text and a complete roster (with renumberings) make this truly the complete book of "B. & O. POWER."
