PREFACE
As a freshman at West Georgia College, I took a speech class and was assigned an impromptu speech that I had assumed would be several days later because Skinner begins with S which is far down the alphabet. However, the professor decided on reverse order, and my turn to speak came quickly in that the few below me alphabetically had also assumed that they wouldn't be called on. They accepted an F, but I faked my way through a history of Moreland including farming, logging, highways, and railroads. I made a C and decided to get better acquainted with the history of Moreland and the railroad. Now almost half a century later I have the opportunity to share some information I've gathered.
I started this adventure as part of an ongoing hobby that has not waned and doesn't seem to wane because more and more information comes together and more and more information is available. One of the things that I have to confess early on is that my historical interest in railroads probably leans more toward the political, practical line, rather than the mechanics of steam engines, boxcars, or passenger trains or the day-to-day function of the railroad. We need to preserve what we know now so that generations in the future can have some degree of accuracy and historical research. That is the purpose of this book.
Compiling data for publication like this is a rather lengthy and tedious process, but enjoyable. It is a hobby that gives me quite a bit of pleasure. Anyone thinking about tackling something like this should consider time, time constraints, and costs which include taking pictures, going to locations, getting into state archives, and so forth. It has been rewarding for me. I hope it turned out to be something worth reading.
As to the future, there appears to be a lot more data available on the A&WP Railroad. There were many stations and stops on the A&WP. We have limited our coverage to stops listed on the Time Tables available to us. I think it would be extremely important for someone else to pick this up and to do an additional publication on various aspects of a railroad like this.
Without support of the clerical staff at Skinner & Associates, P.C. and without the support of my wife, who is a retired English teacher, there is no way this publication could have happened. Without the people who provided data and spent time with me, none of this could be possible. It has been my pleasure to bring it to this point.
Finally, I must confess that in 1999, I considered putting together a remembrance of the A&WP Railroad. At that time, I had too little information to give justice to the railroad. I find that two years later, I am overwhelmed by the amount of railroad trivia and memorabilia that I have been able to collect. Yet, I feel that we have only touched the tip of the iceberg and we will certainly keep moving on. This might be one of the several revisions that might eventua
