INTRODUCTION
The following tests were conducted to determine whether the holding power of nails used in the blocking and bracing of shipments on open top equipment was affected by the application treatment of various types of preservatives to the floor decking. The AAR Mechanical Division Committee on Loading Rules in their October 1965 meeting discussed the subject of holding power of nails in treated flooring after being informed of an incident of a tractor falling from a bulkhead flat car on a Member Road. A telegram from the railroad stated in part: "...Inspection revealed that the deck of this
flat car had been saturated with some type of treatment making it very slippery, and the wood would not effectively hold the 60 penny nails used in blocking this tractor. As a result the nails worked out permitting blocking to become loose and tractor slid off car."
It was the Committee's action to refer this matter to the AAR Research Center for study and the development of data for further evaluation by the Mechanical Division Committee on Loading Rules. This work was conducted as follows in accordance with a test outline submitted by a Committee Member, Mr. A. Verdone, Assistant Supervisor of Car Equipment, Canadian Pacific Railway.
