INDEX219

One day, some thirty years ago, I happened to be strolling in the shopping arcade of the Marunouchi Building, one of Tokyo's oldest emporiums close to Tokyo Central Station. Upon graduating from the university I had been employed by a large trading company as a clerk in charge of toys in their sundries department. Though I now was working with my father, a wholesaler of textiles, my former job had implanted a habit of browsing about toy shops. I often did it, but little did I realize that on this particular day this habit was to change my life.
There in the show window of the Haibara Toy Shop was a model train. It came in a thin wooden case and consisted of one steam tank locomotive painted black, some very colorful, American-type freight cars and a caboose, as well as a circle of snap tracks with two rails on a wooden roadbed. It looked like an American import; but, to my surprise, I found that it had been made in Japan. The manufacturer, the shop clerk kindly informed, was a firm by the name of the New One Manufacturing Company.
There's no explaining compulsions but I had to have that train set. Its price was prohibitive - far beyond what I then could afford. Still, when one wants, something badly enough, one struggles about until finding some way to get it. Somehow or other that train set would be mine.
